Abstract: The purpose of this study is to discuss the importance of social, civic and political responsibility in educational leadership preparation programs. First year students in a doctoral program that emphasizes K-16 leadership were surveyed for information related to the level of civic, political and social emphasis in their current doctoral program and within their experiences in a master's level program, as well as strategies to increase civic and political engagement at the graduate level. Student responses are discussed and suggestions are given on how to improve the educational foundation for social, civic and political responsibilities for graduate students in educational leadership programs.
