Abstract: What to pay newly assigned middle school principals has escaped empirical study within the professional literature. To cast insight on this important human resource function, the importance of school district characteristics, building level variables, human capital endowments of individuals, and a personal attribute of individuals were assessed relative to initial pay from a labor market perspective. Dollar values are calculated for these variables relative to initial salary offers with implications for school districts as well as for applicants.
